Olympians and Olympic Hopefuls are not the only swimmers benefitting from this being an Olympic Year. Due to the schedule revolving around Olympic Trials, FLA’s 13-14 girls relay team of Damaris Iriondo, Lauren Driscoll, Chelsea Britt and Emily Ramirez had opportunities to break both short course and long course relay records, just two weeks apart. It was an opportunity that the 4 girls took full advantage of.
Starting with the FGC Junior Olympics held in Coral Springs, FL from February 28-March 2nd, the girls dominated their age group on their way to breaking 4 out of 5 Gold Coast Records. The only relay record that was left standing was the 30-year old 200 Free relay, which they missed by only 2 tenths of a second. They broke the 400 Free (3:32.37) and the 800 Free (7:38.59) Relay records each by 4 seconds. The 200 and 400 Medley relay records fell by a combined 3 seconds.
The Speedo Champions Series Southern Sectional meet was Long Course this year due to the quadrennial Olympic year, and the 4 girls broke 5 out of 5 13-14 relay records just 2 weeks after breaking 4 short course records. The 200 Free Relay (1:52.19) was ten years old. The 400, 800 Free Relays, plus the 200 Medley Relay were owned by Fort Lauderdale Aquatics achieved last summer, and were all broken again. The 400 medley relay was the last race, and fell to the fearsome foursome on the final day of competition, by ten full seconds (4:27.91)!
Two members of the relay team, Lauren Driscoll(14 years old) and Chelsea Britt(13 years) will be competing at the U.S. Olympic Trials in Omaha, Nebraska at the end of June.
